Step Correct Takes Center Stage at Club Amazura!
The Step Correct New Years Day National Championship has returned to Jamaica and on January 1, 2014 the nation’s best Black & Latino Greek Letter Organization step teams will be competing on one stage.
Step Correct hit the entertainment circuit in 1999, as a series of step shows where members of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), the umbrella organization for the BGLOs, can put their best step routines on display.
According to Jerry Graves, the producer of Step Correct, the step shows are also a way of showing young people what college life has to offer.
“We try to inspire some of the non-Greeks to learn more about the organizations and go to an informational on their campuses,” Graves informed.
The very first Step Correct step show was held at the Roseland Ballroom, and it pulled in a massive amount of college students from across the nation. According to Keith “Suede” Dos Reis, the vice president of Step Correct, he and Graves took the step show on the road to different colleges and cities, where they showed “how big the stepping situation is.”
Once the step show seed was planted, they started giving away cash prizes to the winning step teams, which allowed them to keep their chapters running and motivated various step teams to audition.
The Jan. 1 step show will be DJed by DJ Spynfo of Hot97 and it will feature performances by all nine of the fraternities and sororities that are a part of the NPHC and a surprise guest performer will sing the Black National Anthem. An after-party will follow the step show.
Step Correct has always been known for its concert-type atmosphere.
“That’s how we keep the show exciting,” said Keith Suede DosReis Jr., co-producer and host.
Suede likes to get the crowd involved in the show, which he says takes it to another level.
“The crowd takes the show as serious as the host takes it,” he said.
Step Correct has teamed up with Hot 97, a New York Hip Hop radio station, sense 2004 where they introduced “Hip Hop votes 2004: Stand Up and Be Counted.”
The Imani Dancers and a couple of the Step Correct step teams have performed at several of Hot 97’s Summer Jams.
The event will start at 8:30 p.m. and doors open at 6:00 p.m. Tickets for the event can be purchased for $20 on the Step Correct web site, www.stepcorrect.com.
The step show and after-party will be held at Amazura, equipped with jumbo projection screens, where they will play previous step show tapes and video of the show.
Amazura is located at 91-12 144th Place in Jamaica. For further information about the step show visit the web site or contact the Suede at (718) 809 6209.
